APPLIED SCIENCE (Double Award)

Applied Science has been designed to enable students to gain an understanding of a wide range of scientific applications.  The qualification provides students with the essential skills, knowledge and understanding of the scientific sector and gives an insight into career opportunities in scientific fields, as well as enabling entry to Further or Higher Education programmes.

What will I study?

The GCE in Applied Science has a similar AS/A2 structure. In AS students are required to complete six units:

  • Unit 1   Investigating Science at work
  • Unit 2   Energy Transfer Systems*
  • Unit 3   Finding out about Substances
  • Unit 4   Food science and technology
  • Unit 5   Choosing and using materials*
  • Unit 6   Synthesising organic compounds

* These units will be through external examinations and the remainder are assessed through portfolio work.

What are the opportunities after Applied Science?

Students can enter further education in Scientific areas including Sports Science, Health Care, the Chemical Industry, Environmental Study and Forensic Science

What are the entry requirements?

Four GCSE A*-C including English or Maths and Science or a pass in GNVQ Intermediate Science.
