Departmental Aims
We aim to develop the pupils as a whole person: spiritually, morally, socially and culturally as well as providing an interesting and challenging course at all key stages.
Resources
The department is well furnished with a variety of resources for learning including textbooks, DVDs, videos, religious artefacts, powerpoint presentations etc.
Curriculum
KS3
At Key Stage 3 we follow the ICONS course recommended by Brentwood diocese.
Pupils study three areas in each year:
Year 7: The Living Church, Christ the Light and Becoming fully human.
Year 8: Life Times, Living History and Here in this place.
Year 9: Faith Challenges, At the Heart of Belief and A vision for Living.
In each year one other world religion is studied in the summer term:
Year 7 – Hinduism
Year 8 – Judaism
Year 9 - Islam
KS4
At key stage four we follow the Edexcel GCSE course, studying Unit P (Mark’s Gospel) in year 10 and Unit C (Religion and life based on a study of Catholic Christianity) in year 11. There is no coursework. There will be an examination at the end of each year.

KS5
In Years 12/13 students are offered the OCR A Level Religious Studies specification, studying Philosophy and Ethics. There is no coursework. Students sit two exams at the end of year 12 and two exams at the end of year 13, each exam lasting for one and a half hours. In Philosophy we study, for example, arguments for God’s existence, the problem of evil, Theodicies, Plato and Aristotle.
Some examples of topics covered in ethics are: Ethical theories, abortion, euthanasia, genetic engineering and war and peace.
