Departmental Aims
The Design and Technology department aims to provide pupils with the opportunity to combine practical and technological skills with creative thinking to design and make products. Pupils are encouraged to think creatively and to solve problems both as individuals and members of a team.
Resources
The school has a new specialist workshop with CAD/CAM facilities, Graphics and Textiles rooms and two Food Technology rooms.
Curriculum
KS3
In Key Stage 3, pupils cover the following areas:
- Resistant Materials, including CAD/CAM and Graphics
- The Licence to Cook programme
- Textiles
KS4
In year 10 and 11 pupils have the opportunity to study the following GCSE courses:
- Resistant Materials
- Graphic Products
- Catering
- Resistant Materials and Graphics follow the Edexcel examination board. In both subjects pupils are assessed on two units:
Unit 1: Creative design and make activities - This unit is internally and externally assessed via coursework completed in controlled conditions. It is worth 60%
Unit 2: Knowledge and Understanding - This unit is externally assessed via an examination. It is worth 40%
Catering follows the Welsh examination board. Students are taught cooking skills applicable to as though they were cooking in industry. Many aspects of nutrition, mass production, speed of cooking, safety and presentation are covered, with the assessment being focused mainly on the pupils cooking skills:
- Two practical examinations are worth 40%
- A written coursework project is worth 20%
- A final examination is worth 40%
